Power security assessment has been considered as a progressive issue since the occurrence of system instability in the utilities are somewhat unpredictable. The discussion is normally dealt with the voltage security assessment and voltage contingency ranking and analysis. This report presents the development of algorithms for voltage security assessment and voltage contingency ranking and analysis. The first part of this research objective is subdivided into two components, i.e: the determination of system violation in power transmission system and the determination of loaded bus in a radial distribution system. The second part of the research objective is to develop an algorithm for contingency analysis and ranking which in turns applying it for identifying the critical line outages in a power transmission system. Computer programmes were written in Matlab to realize the algorithms. Tests were conducted on the IEEE Reliability Test Systems for validation purposes and verifications were also performed by making comparisons with other techniques. Results showed that the developed technique is capable and feasible to be adopted practically and an agreement was achieved in the results obtained from the tests. The information obtained from the research can be utilized by the utilities as the reference for continuous monitoring hence undesirable disastrous events could be avoided.
