Abstract

Many literatures viewed that university management and goveming bodies are the factors that determined the job satisfaction among the academic staff. Academics' satisfaction is also associated with frreir feeling ald attitude on primary tasks of teaching and research" This study was conducted on academic staffat Universiti Teknologi MARA Terengganu (UiTlvff) widr dre objectives of identifying the patterns of job satisfaction and dissatisfaction, establishing the level ofjob satisfaction amd discovering the determinanb of job satisfaction. In view of the frct that job satisfaction is situationd and very much influenced by immediate and current events evolving around the urorkplace, lhe researchers decided to develop their on'n instrument for this shrdy" Pattems of satisfaction and dissatisfaction among UiTMT lecturers were identified using mean analysis for each item in the questionnaire" Lecturers were most satisfied with seeking knowledge to improve teaching skills" whereas they were very unsatisfied with the amount of time allocated to carry out research. Results from overall mean satisfaction showed that lecturers were moderately satisfied with their job. The main determinanb of UiTMT lecturers' job satisfaction were found to be 'Satisfaction with immediate boss', 'satisfaction with management-lecturer relationship', 'Satisfaction with perforrrance evaluation (SKT)', 'Satisfaction with responsibility in management work' , ild 'Satisfaction with teaching'" Evidence showed lhat satisfaction with managementlecturer relationship ard with treatnent by immediate boss were significant predictors of overall job satisfaction. As a recornmendation, the university management should induce good relationship widr lecturers" by giving good and fair treatrnent and recognition. The management should also seriously reconsider the teaching workloads assigned to each lecturer and at the same time they should hire tutors as teaching assistants to the lecturers.
