The change in the medium of instruction from Bahasa Melayu to English at UiTM has evoked concern over the problems students will encounter when learning their majors in English. In view of this concern, this study investigated on the problems students encountered when listening to academic lectures in English. Twenty-six first semester diploma students undertaking Diploma in Office Management and Technology at UiTM Jengka campus were chosen to be the participants for this study. In discovering the problems these students face, a questionnaire was distributed after a series of four observed lectures. The same number of post4ecture comprehension tests were administered, and the scores obtained were used to measure the participants' understanding of each lecture. Personal interviews were also carried out with six randomly chosen participants. The findings revealed that the students do encounter problems in comprehending academic lectures in English. Three major affecting factors identified, all of which are the language of presentation, schema knowledge and concentration problems. These findings have significant pedagogical implications for the content lecturers and ESL professionals. They provide the areas in which the content lecturer should emphasise on when lecturing to ensure that students achieve optimal comprehension of the lectures. Similarly, ESL professionals can benefit from the language problems related to lecture comprehension. They can assist the students by designing pre-sessional or.in-session training and programs to prepare the students for the academic listening task.
