Abstract

This study explores the relationship between the way an in-house union organizes itself and its delivery effectiveness. Data were gathered through a survey of union members of Kesatuan Pekerja–Pekerja Perusahaan Otomobil Nasional Sdn Bhd (n = 89). Correlation and multiple regression analysis were used to examine the relationship between the variables. The results suggest that, firstly, union organization was significantly correlated with union effectiveness. Secondly, there were significant relationships between six dimensions of union organization, namely, trade union as source of information and mediator, power of the union, trade union responsiveness to members’ problems, trade union understanding of employer’s business, and trade union ability to communicate and share information and union effectiveness. Finally, trade union as source of information and mediator was the most important predictor of union effectiveness. The implications of the study for practice and theory are discussed.
